Affiliate disclosure: EAS GEO is applying to the Semrush affiliate program and will earn a commission when you purchase through links on this page once approved. The EAS GEO filter evaluation was conducted independently. The affiliate application timeline is transparent above, this is not a tool EAS GEO recommends applying for on day one.
Timing note for solo operators: Semrush's affiliate program requires demonstrated traffic before approving applications. EAS GEO's recommendation is to apply at 60–90 days after launch, once baseline traffic data is available. This transparency is deliberate, EAS GEO does not recommend applying for programs your site doesn't yet qualify for.

What Semrush does

Semrush is the largest SEO and competitive intelligence platform in the market. Its database covers over 25 billion keywords across 140 countries, with backlink data from over 43 trillion links. At the enterprise scale, there is no competitor that matches its depth of competitive research, SERP feature tracking, or content gap analysis.

The GEO capabilities are embedded in two modules. The AI Overviews tracking module (part of Position Tracking) monitors whether your brand and target keywords appear in Google AI Overviews on a daily basis. The Brand Monitoring tool tracks mentions across the web and social platforms, the raw citation signal that feeds into AI engine visibility. Combined, these two modules give you a full picture of both your organic Google AI presence and the third-party citation ecosystem that feeds it.

Semrush also publishes some of the most cited research on AI search trends, the AI Overviews impact studies, the SEO-to-GEO transition data, the citation overlap analysis between Google rankings and AI citations. For operators who want to stay current on how AI search is evolving, Semrush's research content is a primary source.

When Semrush is the right call for a solo operator

Semrush is the right tool when the competitive intelligence at its depth is justified by the scale of the content operation. The specific thresholds where the upgrade makes sense: 10,000+ monthly sessions, publishing six or more articles per month, operating in a competitive niche where knowing exactly which keywords competitors are targeting changes your content calendar. Below those thresholds, SE Ranking and Frase provide sufficient capability at lower cost.

The $139/month Pro plan is the correct entry tier for solo operators. It covers five projects, 500 tracked keywords, and the full suite of competitive research tools. The Guru tier at $249/month adds historical data and content marketing features, relevant at the scale where historical trend analysis changes strategy decisions.

The SEO-to-GEO research advantage

One of Semrush's underrated advantages for GEO strategy is its topic research and content gap analysis, which reveals the specific questions and sub-topics your competitors are covering that you're not. For GEO, this is a citation gap analysis, the topics where other brands are being cited by AI engines that you're not covering in your content. Filling those gaps systematically is how share of voice grows over time.

The competitive positioning for Semrush relative to SE Ranking is honest: Semrush has a larger database, more established brand authority in the SEO research space, and deeper historical data. SE Ranking has a lower price point, native GEO citation tracking on a continuous basis, and European data residency. For operators choosing between them at the early stage: SE Ranking first, Semrush later when the deeper competitive intelligence justifies the cost difference.

EAS GEO filter verdict

Semrush passes all five EAS GEO filter rules at the appropriate scale. The platform was evaluated during the May 2026 EAS GEO buildout, the competitive research and AI Overviews tracking were both tested on EAS content. It is solo-operator viable when the content operation has reached the scale where the deeper competitive intelligence pays for itself. Privacy posture is appropriate for the platform category. Exit is clean with full data export.

Start with SE Ranking. Upgrade to Semrush when the competitive intelligence depth is justified by the scale of the content operation. That's the honest recommendation, and it's the EAS standard.
